What is engineering?

Finding one definition of engineering is difficult. This is because engineers do many things, and perform many functions. The standard definition of engineering is provided by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET):

Engineering is the profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences gained by study, experience, and practice is applied with judgment to develop ways to utilize, economically, the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind.

Most definitions of engineering reflect that engineering is the application of science & math to solve technical problems and create new systems, products or devices to benefit society. Engineers are designers. They can design everything from tiny computer chips to skyscrapers, develop extraction processes for gold or oil, develop new materials for autos or airplanes, harness energy from the sun, or work in myriad ways to improve health care, sustainability and community development. People who are successful in the engineering field are creative, inquisitive, analytical and detail-oriented. They can function as part of a team and communicate well, both orally and in writing. Most engineers specialize in a particular area.

Students who plan to transfer to the Colorado School of Mines should consult the transfer agreement course matrix and RRCC Pathway to Transfer to CSM
